Electronic Current Transformers in Digital Substations and Smart Grids

With the advancement of digital substations and smart grids, electronic current transformers (CTs) are increasingly used for measurement, protection, and monitoring within power systems. The primary function of a current transformer is to convert large primary-side currents into smaller, measurable secondary-side currents. It’s crucial to note that the secondary side of the CT should never be open-circuited, as its operation is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction.

Types of Current Transformers

  • High Voltage: Used for systems with voltages above 10KV.
  • Medium Voltage: Typically used at 10KV.
  • Low Voltage: Applied in systems with 1KV or lower.

Split Core Current Transformers (SCTs)

  • Primary Use: SCTs are mainly used in low voltage applications, such as low-voltage power distribution cabinets or overhead lines.
  • Design Considerations:
    • SCTs require opening and closing, limiting their ability to maintain effective sealing and insulation.
    • In specific cases, SCTs can be used at 10KV if the primary current carrier is a well-insulated cable structure.
    • However, due to the close proximity of the SCT’s opening and closing parts to bare busbars, which lack effective isolation and safety distance, SCTs are generally restricted to low-voltage applications when installed on busbars.

Open-Ended Low-Voltage Current Transformer

The working principle of an open-ended low-voltage current transformer involves the primary winding being connected in series with the line under test. The primary current (Ip) is transformed into a secondary current (Is), which can typically be 5 A, 1 A, or as low as 10 mA, depending on the number of secondary turns in the transformer and the impedance of the secondary circuit and connecting wires.
