A single current transformer (CT) within a GFCI unit induces any differential current by inducing a net magnetic field around the two current-carrying conductors. If the “hot” and “neutral” currents are equal, their opposite directions will produce opposite magnetic fields, and the net magnetic field induced by the CT will be zero. However, if the load plugged into this outlet has a ground fault, the two currents will not be equal and the CT will detect a net magnetic field.
These protection devices are very sensitive and trigger contacts with differential current values in the milliamp range. This is important because ground faults present in appliances are likely to pass through the body of a person or animal, in which case just a few milliamps can be harmful or even fatal.
